LOSRAS coordinates a group of befrienders and supporters of refugees settled in the Lewes area, in particular Syrian families who have come to the UK under the government Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme (or the Syrian Resettlement Programme, SRP). There are a number of volunteering opportunities:
- Befriending: this involves visiting the family on a regular basis (initially half a day per week), as part of a team, to help with orientation, form filling, conversation, shopping, etc. There are often many health appointments, etc., so help with transport is needed as well.
- English: there is a great demand for help with English. There is a weekly class in Newhaven run by volunteers with ESOL experience, and sometimes new tutors are required for this. Many families and individuals would also like language help at home; this could be one to one teaching, conversation, or help with children’s school homework.
- Driving, occasional house set up, cooking, etc.
