LOSRAS aims to promote the welfare of refugees & asylum seekers in and beyond the Lewes District by raising awareness of issues relating to refugees and asylum seekers; providing practical help and responding to local issues as they arise; and advocating and lobbying to improve the rights of refugees and asylum seekers.
Membership is open to all who share these aims, irrespective of personal affiliations and beliefs. LOSRAS members receive a bi-monthly newsletter detailing local actions and events and providing information on relevant national issues, as well as email alerts of both local and national events/campaigns. Members also have access to the LOSRAS lending library of fiction and non-fiction refugee-related books for both adults and children. Book lists are available to support libraries, schools and colleges or for general interest. LOSRAS offers support to local schools by providing expert trained teachers to talk about the experience of refugees and asylum seekers in the context of education on human rights and diversity in society.
LOSRAS hosts regular open meetings and talks in Lewes on a wide range of current refugee issues, and runs related arts events. Each year the group has an information stall in the Cliffe Precinct to mark Refugee Week and as part of Lewes Societies Fair. The charity also provides information stalls at other local events, for instance working in collaboration with the Depot Cinema in Lewes.
Each year LOSRAS undertakes fundraising activities, which also provide a focus for members and supporters – particularly a spring plant sale and an annual sponsored walk over the Downs.
LOSRAS advocates for changes in law and procedure to improve the lives and life chances of refugees and asylum seekers. Members are currently actively involved in campaigns to end the use of arbitrary indefinite immigration detention and to enable more refugees to enter the UK, particularly unaccompanied asylum seeking children. LOSRAS members lobby, participate in national as well as local campaigns that support our aims, and have attended local and national demonstrations in support of refugees and asylum seekers, as well as directly engaging with local elected officials.
LOSRAS supports individual families, unaccompanied children and adults in the local area in a range of ways, providing educational and language help and practical assistance.
